Every author uses parts of people he or she knows when building characters - but skatergirl is absolutely right. Stoneybrook doesn't exist and neither do Kristy, Claudia, Mary-Anne, Stacey, Mallory, Jessie, Dawn and the rest of them that got added towards the end of the series.

According to several web sites: "Her ideas for her book come from a lot of different places. Some are based on personal experiences, like childhood memories, and feelings. All of her characters are fictional but they are all based on real people. Sometimes Ann names her characters after people she knows or she chooses names that she likes."
