Supose a child dhad an active imagination and could visulaize things as monsters
For example:
dog = were wolf
hose = giant snake
sheet = ghost

a dripping faucet = drooling monster
certain house plants = monster arms reaching out
cat or dogs glowing eyes at night = a monster lurking in the shadows
the tv = a black void ready to suck you in if you get too close (my nephews got that idea somehow)

once the lights are turned out at night anything can be scary. Even the shadows and the noises from outside. Have you heard the fridge growling late at night. Some clothes left on a chair, dose it not look like a person. If you scare easily then anything can look like a monster.
