Could be your gallbladder. Gallbladder pain can be constant or can come and go and can be on either side or right in the middle. Chances are it would get worse after eating a meal containing fatty items, but not always the case. (I had my attack after prime rib)

Your best bet is to get an appointment as soon as you can to get it checked out to rule that out as well as any other serious problems.

Good Luck!

You are having pain in a region of your body we might liken to a crossroads - it's a busy place, and all sorts of things happen there. Sometimes you meet interesting things, sometimes a couple of scrappy folk come by, and on very rare occasion some idiot decides to dive-bomb the place. You need to get an informed oberver to tell you what's going on at this cross-roads.

The location you describe is at a point commonly clled the "solar plexus." This is a point of attachment of multiple muscles as well as the diaphragm, and all sorts of ligaments. There are many reasons why you might experience pain here, and one of the most common is called a "hiatal hernia." This is a separation in the skeins of muscle over your abdominal area. A huge percentage of people are born with this. It is generally not life threatening but surely can be inconvenient.

You may also be doing something to cause strains or pulls of the muscles.

Sometimes this is the place on your body where "acid reflux" makes itself known, too.

If the pain is so sharp and persistent it disables motion or activity, then you really need to see a doctor quickly.

And it is possible that your pain could be related to your heart or the membrane about it, the pericardial sac.

Seeing a doctor is WISDOM rather than a panic response. So much can or cannot be wrong - but this is one region of the body where it is not easy for anyone to know what is causing your pain without a skilled and perhaps extensive physical study. Don't go starting getting short of breath and terrified, just calmly figure out if everyone (almost) is saying a doctor's attention makes sense, then it is probably a good idea, eh?

Could always be a fractured rib. You'd be suprised how easily they fracture with a hard cough or an external impact. Could also be a heart problem (depending which side we're talking about). Either way, it might pay to get it checked out.

I have had the same problem, once in a while for years, so I wouldn't think it's anything too serious. Could be trapped gas, tight bra, or pleurisy (inflammation of the lining of the lung)--I've had this myself--which usually clears up on it's own, of course if you smoke or have had heart problems, see your doctor!
