how often does something that lame happen at the World Cup games? I mean there doesn't seem to be much controversary over the Italian player doing so, so I wonder how common an occurence that has been in the history of World Cup games and what other teams has that happened to?

Does anyone have any specific statistics of previous games in which that has happened?

It's difficult to find statistics because it's an unwanted record, but it doesn't occur too often, but it could happen again in any match, mainly for the preasure of the tournament over the players and any one could make a mistake.
In this world cup, it happen in the match: England vs Paraguay, final socre: 1:0 (The goal was by Carlos Gamarra of Paraguay) so that was worst than the result of the match USA vs Italy, final score 1:1 (The goal of USA, was by Cristian Zaccardo of Italy)

For your record, these are the statistics related to FIFA world cup:
# Carlos Gamarra’s misplaced header against England, timed at three minutes, was the quickest own goal in FIFA World Cup history. The previous fastest was scored by Yugoslavia’s Ivan Horvat, who netted an own goal in the 9th minute against Germany FR in 1954.
# England have twice benefited from own goals in the competition, the first was scored for them by Josef Barmos of Czechoslovakia in 1982. But Italy have benefited most of all – four FIFA World Cup own goals have worked to their advantage.

# The first ever FIFA World Cup own goal was scored by Switzerland’s Ernst Loertscher v Germany in 1938 while only one game in FIFA World Cup history has featured two own goals – the clash between Portugal and USA on 5 June 2002 with Jorge Costa and Jeff Agoos the luckless pair.

I think it depends on the situation... For starters, however, there are no constitutional amendments protecting men from anything or giving men the right to anything specifically. Now this might mean that men are the dominant factor and have to be kept "in check" or it might mean that there is a psychological factor at play in society that says women are "weaker" and need protection. I'm willing to bet, you'd hear both sides of the argument with various caveats to accompany those arguments. We have a local newspaper (The Westword) that recently published an article about a guy suing nightclubs over the Famous Ladies' Night that usually occurs on Wednesdays. His claim was that women get free drinks from men as it is, so why is there discrimination against men on Wednesday nights allwoing women to drink free and not pay a cover charge. (The bonehead is yet to win a case...) There is certainly other areas to examine: payscales, gender-specific careers, maternity vs paternity leave, etc. I think we live in a more equivalent society than people are willing to admit, but on a case by case analysis, I think you'll see both genders treated unfairly.

It happened in the 94 World Cup when a player from Colombia (Andres Escobar) scored an "own goal" during the match against the USA....USA ended up winning 2-1.

10 days later, he was murdered outside a night club

It's called an "own goal".

It doesn't happen very often, but has happened before in World Cup finals. In the England-Paraguay game on June 11th, England won 1-0. The goal was scored by Paraguay captain Carlos Gamara.

First own-goal in World Cup history was scored by Ernst Lötscher of Switzerland against Germany in a first round replay game in 1938.

It isn't that common...it is rare in all levels of soccer. It was just a mistake that costed them the game. But I'm sure its happened before in the World Cup.

Not very often, This was the first time I've ever seen it happen during a match, especially a world cup match.

It happened to the Colombian team and the player was shot for it when he went home (not by the gov't but by a rogue person).

There's a lot of pressure put on the players for this tournament cuz the world is (literally) watching them, so it's easy to crack. It's a stupid mistake, but it happens.

It had already happened even in this World Cup, Paraguayan Gamarra scored against themselves, for England.
It is not that rare!
