Turkey needs any assistance and in any form, to get out of the slow, or non progressive way, it has been for the last decades.
Now: Does Eu needs Turkey? Most likely not! Why would EU need this Asian state, which does not respect any of the regulations of EU?
Of course, the people of Turkey greatly need their state to join the EU, so that there will be more freedom, protection of their human rights, improvement of economy and so on!

Yes it's to their benefit to do so economically as well as Politically. Not only is Turkey a part of NATO it's an ISLAMIC country to boot. It's the perfect ally for the EU.Iran is the old Persian empire, where Turkey is the old OTTOMAN.Turkey has the option of using Nukes as a part of the alliance.Iran and Turkey are not friends. In fact they hate each other. So for security it's a HOME RUN.

It is good to see a Muslim nation joining the rest of the world in the 21st century. Turkey is a good friend of the free nations of Europe and the west. I don't know the intricacies of them joining the E.U., but if they want in, let 'em. I imagine closer ties with other strong economies will only benefit the Turkish people.

Turkey would not necessarily need to take on the Euro, neither UK or Sweden have. Their is lots of fors and against however I live in UK and travel europe extensively. Its much better with Euro. Turkey wants o be a major player in Europe so will Definately need to join regardless of currency.

If Turkey join the European Union is going to be a big mistake.
1. E.U. will have to pay to much to the good damn turks to help their economy. We pay too much already for the new east european members.
2. U.S.A. will have another agent in the e.u. (like U.K.) to spoil everything.
3. Turks are not europeans and will never be.

Ps. The others who answered are not eu citizens .

I believe for Turkey to be a serious player in Europe they need to do so. That would involve changing their currency to the Euro, which can be very hard to do.
