is there a sensor on a 1997 catera that would go bad and cause this the trans works fine ececpt starting off in third gear on take off instead of first

This problem does not mean there is a problem with the actual transmission. The car transmission when it has set a trouble code goes into a limp mode. The problem is probably electric between computer and transmission. Third gear is what happens when the trans has a trouble code set. Sometimes it can be a shift solenoid or pressure solenoid. You need to get someone to check trans trouble codes. I warn you that if you continue to drive car in third you will burn transmission up. Good Luck

Yes there are shift sensors on the trans. that tell the trans when to shift if the plug is dirty it can cause this but its more than likely that the trans its self is bad

The electronic solenoid is bad in the tranny. It can be fixed at most transmission shops.

Trans is bad... needs repair ASAP!
