I recently met someone who is a legal immigrant to this country, from Europe - he works long distance on the computer for a company in Britain who pays his salary into his British bank account - now the question is, is he also liable for income tax in the United States? He doesn't know, he asked me, and I don't know ... does anybody?

If he has permanent residence, then yes, he must pay income tax to the US on all income, regardless of the source. If he does not have permanent residence, then probably not. The tax departments on both sides should credit him for tax paid to the other country.

It depends on the tax treaty between the two countries. Is he a British citizen or a citizen from another europeian country? This can cause a big difference in how the treaty effects him. Bottom line is he needs to see a US tax specialist who deals with international tax clients. He'll know who gets paid what and can ensure he's not paying more then he legally needs to.
