Yes, it is reliable, and yes, it can get scratched really easily. However, most Nano's that do get scratched are ones that are not taken care of and do not have a protective case over it.
As for the screen, purchase PDA screen protective covers to cut and fit onto your iPod screen. This will help prevent the screen from getting damaged as well. If you invest trying to protect them, the pay off will be worth it. Peace.

1) yes, it is very reliable, however, battery life is very poor. the nano is also shock-proof and won't skip like a cd player. in addition, apple designed the nano with flash memory, instead of the original one's with hardrives
2) all things get scratches man, these things happen. the nano actually comes with a little velvet sleeve to put it in.when you're not scrolling for songs, just put it on hold and slide it back into the sleeve. that's what i do and it doesn't have a scatch on it. some people just don't take care of there stuff.

I have an iPod nano, and I do enjoy it a lot!
1) Yes, it is realiable. It's easy to navigate, and easy to transfer songs. Besides my iPod nano i've had other iPods, and never had a problem with them. The battery lasts about 14 hours.
2) Yes, it can easily get scratched, so I recommend you to get a screen protector film, and a cover for it. I've had mine for 6 months and it still looks like new.
