Starship. This song is often voted as worst rock and roll song ever. Good reason too. The Jefferson Airplane morphed into the Jefferson Starship morphing into Starship. JA had many hits including Somebody to Love, White Rabbit and Volunteers. JS had hits like Ride The Tiger, Count On Me, Jane, Girl with The hungry Eyes, Find Your Way Back and Winds Of Change. They were an awesome band until they became Starship. Then they moved from kick a&& R&R to namby pamby crap. I use to go see them live in Lake Tahoe every year. About 20 of us would go because we knew what a great show it was. Then they became Starship and sucked. We never went back.

'Mick and Slick' (Mick Fleetwood and Grace Slick) were singing about "any-place, USA". It was no one city in particular but, it's implied, every city. The song asserts that this 'place' is built on a 'foundation' of Rock & Roll music. Take a look at the cities that were 'built' on Country Music or the Blues. It's a fun song, not to be taken literally. Cool video, too! "We built this city...(wang-wang), we built this city on rock and roll....We built this city...."

San Francisco. The Jefferson Airplane was from there and on the cover of the old 45 rpm there was a photograph of the group standing with San Francisco in the background.

Of course that doesn't keep from being one of the worst songs in recorded history.

San Francisco -

(And I agree Mr. Curious - This is one of the worst song ... If THIS had been the song that the city had been built on, it would still be a pile of rubble from the 1910 earthquake!)

Jefferson Starship (aka Starship) never says in the song exactly

but if you listen to the radio announer, the hints are San Francisco

..and even though it was awarded the worst song ever, I still love this song compared to others like "Ice,Ice Baby"

Considering this is one of the lamest rock songs ever written, who cares?

And to think, there was a time when Jefferson Airplane was cool.
