You need to purchase Windows XP home or Pro (DSP). If you can buy an OEM version why not, it's just an issue of lisenceing. The morons who think out these lisensing schemes are bullies.

If you can get a legal copy with and activate it then that will work. If you bought the computer with a pirated version of windows then you can report them. I am not sure but ithink if you contact Microsft in your country and report the place/person who sold you the PC with the non-genuine copy on they will give you a discount on a new copy. If you did it yourseld just buy another one.

If you can stand not to benifit from the Windows Genuine Advantage program save your money and wait until Windows Vista comes out and buy it rather.

You'll need to buy a genuine copy of Windows XP. You can find OEM (no support) copies for as little as 100 dollars for Windows XP Home Edition.

If you purchased the computer new go back to the dealer. Otherwise buy genuine Windows.

FYI - OEM software can legally only be purchased on a new computer. Be careful or you'll wind up with another illegal copy.
