There is a whole lot more work in New Orleans and the surrounding area than affordable housing. I suggest finding housing of some kind before you go. If you are willing to take a house or apt that is damaged and do the repairs yourself, there are plenty of places. If you are a carpenter this may be a great option for you. Some employers are able to put workers into apts or temporary housing but that usually means shared, if not crowded, quarters. Otherwise, unless you plan to make a ton of money, renting or buying a place in tip-top shape may be out of your reach. Another option is renting in Baton Rouge or another area and driving. Look at www.craiglist.org and www.nola.com.

Realistically, the best way to find a place is to ask any of the employers or area business people if they, or anyone they do business with, own any of the homes and apts that are being remodeled. Many own hundreds. Surely you have something to offer and can do a favor or three for someone who will be happy to return a favor to you. It is the New Orleans way. Remember it ain't what you know but who you know. Down here, that has not changed.

The mexicain workers that you will be competing with seem to be able to find a place to live so you should too. You will probably have to bunk with a few others.

The areas that were pricey before are really pricey now. Garden district and all of the college bound neighborhoods.

You best bet is to either go to www.craigslist.org and search or www.nola.com and check the ads posted.

I live uptown and there are tons of apartments for rent in my area. Craigslist.com is a great starting place to look, but also driving around and looking in neighborhoods you're interested in will help you find a place. Good luck with your search.

Kitty Kat is right, it depends on who you know in this city, if you've got connections, you're going places, otherwise you are better off staying where you are. Living here is really hard right now, it is mentally challenging, if you think you can handle it, we need all the help we can get.

Yes you can and will find housing here. It's a matter of what side of town you want to live on.
