Paul = 15.40 + 6.23 + 7.80 = 29.43
15.40 + 6.23 + 29.43 = 51.06

First solve for Paul:

7.80 + Donna + Michael = Paul
7.80 + 15.40 + 6.23 = 29.43

And now, the total:

Donna + Michael + Paul
15.40 + 6.23 + 29.43 = 51.06!

and that is your answer!

The three of them together have $51.06.

Donna & Michael have $21.63 combined (15.40 + 6.23).
Paul has 29.43 (21.63 + 7.80).
Thus, all three combined have 15.40 + 6.23 + 29.43 = $51.06

The problem tells you the amount that Donna and Michael have, so add those up and add Paul's extra to find out how much Paul has, and then add those 3 numbers to get their total.
