I know that he is bullet proof because he is from outer space, but the fabric of his clothes should be of this planet. Where does one find that? I want a pair of khakis out of that stuff.

Within the context of the narrative, the costume serves a variety of practical functions.

In most stories, the costume was designed by his adoptive mother Martha Kent. She created it out of the blankets from the rocket that brought him to Earth. These blankets, like everything else from Krypton under a yellow sun environment such as Earth's, shared Clark's invulnerability. His armor-like costume could also protect others that wore it. While carrying passengers in flight, Superman would wrap them in his cape to protect them from air friction, or employ it as a trauma blanket (still cited as a function-***-explanation for the cape).

They did something like this on Mythbusters once.

The explanation lies in the very fact that Superman himself *is* (as you stated), bulletproof.

Because of this, the bullet is unable to penetrate the clothing. If Supie was wearing 5 jumpers underneath his costume, then the bullet would indeed penetrate it.

I ought to be able to give you a more reasoned explanation, but it's quite late.

The most common explanations for his invulnerability are Superman having a super-dense molecular structure and/or a supercharged bioelectric "aura" which acts as an invisible "force field" around his body within a few millimeters from his skin, and presumably within his body as well. The proximity of this field to his skin means that loose clothes, for example, may be burned off of him, while cloth that is close to his body is protected by the "aura;" This phenomenon is sometimes cited as Superman's reason for wearing a skin-tight bodysuit. It is sometimes implied that he can unconsciously extend this field to an undetermined extent to protect a greater area, allowing him to carry huge objects (such as a car) in Earth's gravity without gravity or inertia tearing them apart around his human-sized hands.

There is some sort or personal force field that surrounds his body and prevents his clothes from being destroyed. Originally his costume was from cloth found in his rocketship and that was found to be indestructable. That has since been changed to the current situation.
