This is not a serious question, just for fun, was hoping someone could help explain...Ok, I watched it last night on cable. I got lost because the little girl played by Dakota seemed like the lunatic with the imaginary friend "Charlie". I felt sorry for the dad character played by Robert. The child seems to be responsible for more and more weirdness with "Charlie"- murdering the cat and new girlfriend. Then, all of a sudden dad is outside fighting with Charlie (the neighbor?) and it all gets turned around. All of a sudden the bad guy really is Dad himself? I don't know if it's just me, but I don't get it? Can someone explain?

Sarah is right. They even explain it near the end of the movie. The very last scene reveals that the daughter herself might have the same illness....creepy. Charlie was Deniro's character he just didn't know he was doing those things himself. Him finding out that his wife had been cheating on him made him snap apparently. This movie idea has been rehashed a thousand times.

The father's 2nd personality is Charlie. He has multiple personality disorder, well now it's called dissociative identity disorder. The girl appears to be following in her father's footsteps according to her drawing of her with two heads at the end. The ending where she's in a hospital is an alternative ending, at least on the DVD; I never saw it in theaters.

Watch it again, you'll understand it better. Some movies are like that, the first time you see it you're lost, the second time around you're like: "Oh, now I see."
