How many women get periods when pregnant? Does this last through the whole pregnancy?

Some women DO have their periods through the first part of their pregnancy. It usually lasts until the 4th month. One very rare occations I have heard of women having their periods throughout their entire pregnancies. SO I guess my answer is that it can happen the length of it varies from woman to woman.

Early pregnancy bleeding
Bleeding in early pregnancy is a common occurrence, but this does not signal a true menstrual cycle, as pregnancy hormones prevent the ovary's release of an egg as well as the buildup and subsequent shedding of the uterine lining. If these episodes are intermittent, they can be perceived as periods, and the mother-to-be may not recognize that she is pregnant. In instances where a couple is unaware that they are expecting, it can be particularly emotionally challenging to find out about the pregnancy at the same time they are told that the bleeding might signal a problem.

Women do *not* have a period when pregnant. Menstruation is bleeding caused by ovulation that does *not* lead to pregnancy. Obviously, this is not happening if you are pregnant.

Some women have *non-menstruation* bleeding when pregnant. There can be a number of causes, but other than spotting around the time of the first missed period, she should *always* tell her doctor about it. It is probably normal, but it needs to be checked out.

If a woman does have bleeding, it usually is only one month (implantation bleeding), rarely 2-3 months. I doubt it would ever be more than that, although everyone knows someone whose sister's best friend's mother had bleeding for 9 months...

Many (1 in 10) women have light bleeding during the first few months of pregnancy.
Some pregnant women report that they have vaginal bleeding early on in pregnancy. But this bleeding is usually not like a regular period, it's usually much lighter and irregular, more like spotting.

Many women experience 'periods' when they are pregnant. Normally these are very light with fewer days. I don't believe it will last the entire pregnancy though I'm not sure. If you or someone you know is concered about this you may want to check with your doctor. There could be other reasons for bleeding during pregnancy.

You do not have a period but a little spotting is normal although it should be monitored by a Dr. If you have an actual "period" it means that your uterus is shedding. Shedding during pregnancy is an indication of a miscarriage. There are some conditions that can occur during pregnancy that can cause bleeding so if this is a concern check with your Dr. And please remember if you are bleeding during your pregnancy do not use TAMPONS!! This can be toxic to your baby.

My mother had a light period the first month that she was pregnant with my little brother. Because of that she didn't know that she was pregnant. When my brother was born, he was a month "early" but he was a full term baby.

It does happen, contrary to the first poster's thoughts. It is very rare though. It doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, but you should have it checked by a doctor just to be sure. After all, bleeding is a major sign of miscarriage as well. Please check with your doctor.
