They go to Arizona.. actually, many larger commercial airplanes end up in the Mojava (sp?) Desert at a huge scrap yard. Some are 'moth-balled' and used for parts.. some are purchased and taken out of retirement for other purposes.. some are converted to cargo carriers.. some are used for experiments... some are cut up for scrap.... it really depends on the condition and what the 'owners' want to do with them....
small planes..... like those that private pilots fly... usually aren't retired.. they're bought and restored....

Airplane Graveyards, Almost all transport itams go to some specal graveyard where they sit for repurchase or salvage, some are scraped for other new products. They are stripped and marketed as junk products. Most locations are in the west where there are large open aria to toss stuff. Picture a car junk lot for planes, or boats, or other vehicles.

Cut up and used as scrap. They used to reuse several items from the old planes to refit new ones but because of a ghost incident this practice is no longer done

They're flown to a "boneyard" somewhere out in the desert. We have at least one here in Southern California out in the Mojave desert. It's a huge fenced-in compound where the aircraft just collect dust.
