More than likely the car is not going into overdrive. If it is a FORD the switch is a button on the shifter. Japanese cars are usually on dash board by radio. Overdrive not working is not a real common problem with cars. So check owners manual to see if your car has a switch or button, all vehicles don't have button. Transmission could also be slipping, which is probably not what you want to hear. If it is you can get stuck real easy. If overdrive is not working, it usually doesn't create other problems except bad gas mileage. Good Luck

could be a vacuum problem. could be engine needs to rev higher to develop horsepower, giddy up.
if so, vacuum line could have come loose or got a crack in it. Or even a dirty air filter could restrict air flow dropping the venturi effect (vacuum caused by the ability to suck air). Your check engine light should be coming on. If not, I'd check vacuum lines.

It may not be going into overdrive, check tranny fluid level. You may also have a locking torque converter that is not locking. Hard to diagnose with so little info.

Start with checking your trans. fluid make sure its full if it is then it sounds like the O/D unit is goin out of the trans. Witch means rebuilding the trans.

Your Tranny is slipping you might need to replace it or just check the tranny fluid if fluid is full and it is not pink color (the fluid) on the stick then I would think it is the tranny going
