What is peace exactly? Has anybody lived in a period of peace before and liked it so much? Why are we seeking it so desperately if nobody has ever seen it? I am not joking around I really want to know. Thanks already.

Given the nature of man, there has never been a period of complete peace worldwide (unless it somehow existed in pre-history, which is even less likely.)

We are, by nature, animals. We fight over land and resources, just like animals. We also have the gift (or curse) of sentience, however, and that has allowed great advancements and thought processes that other animals just don't have.

Ideally, and it is ultimately an ideal and by definition likely to be unattainable, we can have some sort of peace. Limited peace, or peace among most nations. A sort of peace where most of the peoples of the world get along most of the time... and even that seems impossible currently. It might not in a few centuries, however, as things have changed very rapidly worldwide over the past few centuries. (We went from outhouses to zero-gravity toilets in space in a span of fifty years, as one example.)

The only likely peace is what Chamberlain once ironically called for just before the invasion of Poland. "Peace for our time." It certainly didn't happen then. But peace is worth working towards, even as an ideal, and the efforts to achieve peace are efforts to ensure better lives for the people of the world.

"Peace" is the ideal of an ill-constituted type of human being. I say those who have inner peace (mental and physiological) do not need outward peace, and may even like some fuss (this is an understatement). People who do not have inner peace, who are mentally and physiologically disturbed, need outward peace to completely indulge in their decadence.

True peace would be matter at 0 degrees Kelvin - the universe frozen over. This state will never come about because it is not there now. Existence will always be in a state of flux, there will always be war, strife, and that is a good thing, because, as Heraclitus says:

"We must know that war is common to all and strife is justice, and that all things come into being and pass away through strife."

Hail strife!

Peace is commonly understood to mean the absence of hostilities. Other definitions include freedom from disputes, harmonious relations and the absence of mental stress or anxiety, as the meaning of the word changes with context. However, there are others who would say that the absence of hostilities would refer to only those hostilities which are evident and that true peace only springs from the heart of each individual.

Some people see peace as a way to slip through self consciouness, as with hippies in the 60's. An affirmative definition for the concept of peace, one that expresses the condition as a state unto itself, rather than as the lack of its antithesis, is: "PEACE: the state or condition of restfulness, harmony, balance, equilibrium, longevity, justice, resolution, timelessness, contentment, freedom, and fulfillment, either individually or simultaneously present, in such a way that it overcomes, demolishes, banishes, and/or replaces everything that opposes it." (by Sevi Regis)

Peace may refer specifically to an agreement concluded to end a war, or to a lack of external warfare, or to a period when a country's armies are not fighting enemies. It can also refer more generally to quietude, such as that common at night or in remote areas, allowing for sleep or meditation. Peace can be an emotion or internal state. And finally, peace can be any combination of these definitions.

Widely-recognized peace symbol.A person's conception of "peace" is often the product of culture and upbringing. People of different cultures sometimes disagree about the meaning of the word, and so do people within any given culture. Peace is not a symbol, peace is a mindset.

No the world has never been totally in peace. We are seeking an end to war, greed, and hatred. We are seeking it because it is human nature to strive for the best and improve. Its like saying "why do scientists look for cures for diseases, we've always had AIDS why are we all of a sudden trying to find a cure"

We shouldn't take war so lightly. I see that you have never been exposed to the horror or you would understand why it is so terrible to not have peace.

I know i'm probably sounding rude and silly. But if the world was at peace, it would be very weird indeed. It just wouldn't seem real, this is real life and peace is just a fantasy. Believe me i would love to have world peace and stuff, but lets face it people. It is never going to happen!

for various reasons because they are lying by saying that but really they'd rather have war or some people really would prefer to have peace instead of war but I certainly would rather have peace even though peace and war can be the same thing even though they are opposite

People become what they are not because of wars.Everything
around made by people for living in peace not for destruction in war. Someone who is strong and wants war simply is lazy and unable to build something himself.

peace is the that thing synonime with the absence of war. we want peace because we dont want innocent people to suffer. imagine that suddenly, a bomb would explode on the roof and your house would fall over you, because your president didn't want to approve something. you would die, and it wouldn't be your fault at all. we want peae because we want to avoid this risk. you see it right now, you are living it, but you can't realise how important is is because you havent experienced any war.

People want peace mostly when they aren't superior to others.. people that are stronger.... don't want peace... for example comunits.. or when america invaded indians.. the indians didn't want to fight.. they wanted peace.. but americans killed them.. most of them(ps they came with a lot of diseases and the indians became sick.. and blamed them).... people that need peace want peace most of all.. people that are stronger don't need peace.. but sometimes they do it(if it's in their interest)
