Do you think you're missing out on something at work? Did you know that companies pocket millions of dollars because folks don't take their vacations? And due to the fact that you've earned it, why not make time for it?

My last 3 office jobs I was the one who paid the bills for the company. That meant several hundred checks each week, with remittance stubs to be mailed with the checks or lien releases to be signed before the checks could be released. I tried once at each company to take a vacation, and my non-crosstrained co-workers made such a mess of my department while I was gone (not to mention all of the work that piled up because nobody was doing any of it in my absence) that it took weeks to sort through the fallout. I found that it was simply not worth the effort to fix all of the mistakes that were made on my behalf. So it really wasn't so much of not making time for a vacation as fearing the overwhelming chaos that was waiting for me when I returned. I have my own business now, and I take vacation time.

The world isn't busy. It's still turning as it always has without any help from us.

However, if you mean people when you say world, pthe eople in this country may be. Or, it may be that city people predominantly want and expect to take vacations, but can't now due to changes in the economy and both parents, largely, having to work. I know that most of the people in small towns may take a week or two off of work, stay home, and do things with the family and friends. Is this what you're referring to as a vacation, or are you talkiing about travelling, which most of the lower-income-class people don't do, and haven't for a long long time due to the cost of travelling.

Without knowing what your real question is, I can't see any way to give you a better answer than this.

Sorry.

In our grand parents/garandparents day people/families regularly took a month off a year. Mainly it was for people to get out of the hot city but it was done and peoples jobs planned around it. Today our jobs are much more intense as far as time. Older days 9 to 5 was the norm and a holiday was truely a holiday with most people off. Most stores/jobs are open early/late and on weekends/holidays. It is expected of us to work this or not work. Most people I know are worried about the money but not because they will lose money (days off) but the fear that if they take too much time off they won't have jobs. Thats not to say business out right say this (I am sure some have) but the implication in most cases is that you can be replaced so tow the line. Our society was once family based but now is business based...

The corporate culture is so project-driven nowadays, you're constantly in the middle of doing some important project, that you cannot walk away from. The best way to go about scheduling a vacation is to buy one like 3-4 months in advance and submit a vacation request the same day, so other people can schedule around it.

I'm self-employed and I work from home. So, if I'm not in the office, no-one is in the office taking care of my 400 clients. So if I take a vacation, I just come back to all the work that's piled up while I was gone. In the last nine years, I've taken a total of eleven days off.

People have the power of spending more money the what they are making, and credit cards company are giving credit to all American even if they can not pay their bills. American people want to show they have more the what they are making , but in real life they struggling because the college loans needs to be pay and the the person needs to get loans after loans to pay credit cards and even food. Life is hard for those the live with credit because they don't know how to stop.

I think America creates a bad environment for their workers -- they encourage them to work harder and harder and they are discouraged from taking time off! Look at the policy they offer where I work--a worker can "cash in his/her vacation" and instead of taking the time off--they get the payout! All that does is burnout the employee! Everyone needs time off to recoup and rejuvenate themselves --look at the foreign countries and how much more time off they are allowed in their workforce -- talk about an inequity!!

Well it depends I have a paid vacation and if not takin I can cash them in. People will be more productive over the course of their carreers if they took their vacations. I understand if your hourly you may need the cash. If your salary like me though not taking your vacation is idiotic.
