After any out with no one on base, the infielders throw the ball around. On a strikeout, the catcher has the ball, so he throws to the third baseman. On a ground out, the first baseman throws to another infielder before the ball goes to the pitcher. They don't do this with men on base, because the runners could advance on a bad throw or they could just steal.

They do with with the bases empty. A traditional baseball thing.
The infielders throw it around - always in the same order - before returning the ball to the pitcher.
Everyone does it, it's not considered showing up anyone.
Geez, some of these answers show an absence of any brain activity.

Well I know they throw the ball around to keep the infielders warmed up but I'm not too sure why they throw to 3rd first.I always thought it was because the 3rd baseman usually gets the least amount of action with the ball.

They do this only when no one is on base, and they do it to keep the infield warm, and to get a chance to throw the ball so their arm doesn't stiffen up. Plus if the pitcher is doing really good, and the fielders don't get much of a chance to field the ball, it can be really fun to just throw it around.

Tradition.............known as "Throwing it around the Horn," this refers to when the pitcher strikes someone out , the catcher throws it to 3rd, he throws it to 2nd and 2nd throws it to shortstop. This keeps everyone loose, happy , and in the game let alone , carrying on tradition
