Medium is not a size, but the size you want is called grande there. They will ask a lot of other options like decaf, and decide if you would like decaf.
BUT there are many types of black coffee go to the website and read all the descriptions of the coffees they serve, decide which you want and remember to order it next time.

There is a coffee shop near my place that sells, "large, extra-large and extra-extra-large coffee's ", I always order a small and everyday this kid says to me, "the smallest one we have is large", which makes absolutely no sense to me.
Fifty bucks says one day that kid is either going to become a cop or a politician, definitely a professional, Murphy's Law. It breaks my heart.
I do not think there is any way you can win in this situation.
You might just say, " Can I please have a coffee" and hope for the best.
The sad reality of this world is that Darwinism no longer holds true. It is now not a case of,
"In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment."
Charles Darwin
I think now it is more a case of,
" When it's a question of money, everybody is of the same religion."
Voltaire
Apparently these days, brains don't count for a hill of beans.

Just ask for a medium black coffee. If they dont respond then just stay there and ask again. Theres no rules for ordering as long. Just ask for it like you would ask for anything. If they are not listening to you then the people who work there are idiots and dont know how to handle customers.

When you order just say, "May I please have a Grande Coffee...black." Oh, and if the "Barista" asks you what flavor you want, if you want a regular ol' coffee and not some fancy flavor then ask for the "House Blend"...that's their most popular coffee and I believe it is the closest thing to what you're looking for. Best of luck to you!

OOH! Go in with a black ski mask on, with a group of friends wearing the same thing.
Real looking toy guns are a plus.
Go in with that, and they'll give you WHATEVER you want.
