I have 256 MB DDR Ram installed (P4, 3.0 Ghz with H.T., 1 MB cache & 40 GB sata HDD) . If I remove some unwanted programs installations like skype, hotmail, yahoo extra's, screen savers, themes, all the programs which I hardly use. After removing them, will this increase the speed of my computer ? Or removing these programs wont make much difference. Presently my computer is showing 56 MB of 246 MB physical memory free & 1.8 GB of 1.9 GB virtual memory free

No it wont. RAM speed is used for scanning your hard drive. When you reboot or start your computer, your RAMs will scan your hard drive to look for programs etc. The more RAM you have, the faster it will scan so it becomes unnoticeable. When you open a program, the RAMs will scan your computer to launch the application and its also used for virtual memory and some is used for your graphics card.
If you remove programs, it will just be less work for your RAM for scanning so thats why it might improve performance, but it wont make your RAM any faster.
256MB ram is not much, but it will handle small tasks. If youre trying to play games, then you might experience a lot of freezing. You should install up to 512MB for a decent processing speed.
If you want your RAM to rest a little and give it less work then do some of the following:
1) Do a disk cleanup. You can right click on your C drive and do a disk clean up or disk compression.
2) Do a disk defrag. It will clean a lot of the space that your programs left behind when you removed them. When you remove a program or delete something, you still leave a space on your hard drive that was already allocated for it. It solves the problem of how data is stored in your hard drive.
3) Go to START then RUN and then type msconfig and hit enter. This will bring up a menu. Go to startup and uncheck everything that you dont want loading up when you reboot your computer. Then go to Services and disable a few programs that you might not want running automatically after you connect to Windows.
4) Do not download and install new programs unless you REALLY REALLY need it. Avoid going to sites that require downloads. And make sure you dont set your browser to automatically download things without your permission.

No not really, it'll free up HD space though! Programs that are running in the background are the ones that eat up RAM. Like the anti-virus software or Windows utilities maintaining the system. You can disable them by going to START MENU > RUN > MSCONFIG then goto the SERVICES Tab and view the ones that you don't need. If you mess up, just reboot and then reactivate the ones that you accidentally deactivated. These programs are the ones that take up alot of RAM space. Also consider upgrading to at least 512MB RAM to run most non-gaming applications at a comfortable level.

If you disable all of the STARTUP programs that you do not need, then you will see an improvement.
Try going to RUN, and entering MSCONFIG. Then go to the STARTUP tab and UNCHECK the programs that you do not need. Make sure that you keep your Antivirus running... of course.
SpyWare is always bothersome. Make sure that you have Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy. The free versions from www.Download.com should do the trick.
In some instances, I have found that Norton Internet Security made a computer run very slowly. Make sure that you have ONLY ONE anti-virus solution and only one FIREWALL. Having duplicates can really make things slow.
Good luck.

You can stop some of the programs in the back ground from running. To do this, go to your start menu and hit run. Then type in msconfig and press enter. Hit the startup tab and uncheck all the programs you don't want to start up. Don't uncheck your antivirus protection. Play around with the other ones to see what works for you. Good luck

YES AND NO.
Why. Becuase when u delete programs that run when the computer is on, wheather u know it or not, or are not using them, it will help.
But u can help ur computer boot and run faster without having to delete ur programs that u might end up needing, or nessacry to run ur computer.( happens sometimes accidentily)
Heres how:
1. Go to RUN in ur Start menu.
2. Type in "msconfig".And hit ok.
3. Go to the Start-up tab and de-select the things u dont want to run.( u might have to guess the names are someitmes abreveated.)
4. Hit apply and ok then it will ask u to restart. Do so.
5. when u restart it will ask u if want the msconfig window to start everytime u boot. Click no.
6. Your done.
Now u have reduced CPU and RAM usage and increased preformance without deleting programs.

By removing programs you are only freeing up some hard disk capacity, unless the programs are always running. Closing or deleting programs that are constantly running on your computer, will help free up some DDR RAM.

that depending on the size of drive where you have put, if those were placed in the same drive of OS and there is less space in that drive then it works, else you have upgrade your RAM,
themes take some space on RAM. so, its better to remove them
