I don't know about a broken heart directly, but I do know that a lot of older people (who have been married or together for 30, 40, 50 years) loose the will to live after their significant other has died. One might die from a heart attack, then the other suddenly starts going down hill and dies 5 months later. It happens all the time.

Not exactly. The heart itself will not give out because of emotional destress unless it was already weak to begin with. So say you're an old fogey, and your wife comes in and says she's been cheating on you, you may be in such shock, that your heart skips a beat, then two, then three....then you die. Otherwise, the mental aspect is what gets people. Depression in this case most often caused by lack of noradrenaline being provided to the brain's reward system (nucleus accumbens), which itself can cause you to take less care of yourself and become sick, and all the other stuff that goes along with depression. It has also been shown that depession will cause a decrease in the functioning of the body's immune system, causing you to be sick more often and possibly die that way. This is the reason for the low rate of survivability beyond 1 year for widows who have been with their partners for 25 years or more.

I think that it is quite possible for something like what you described to happen. There are cases where husbands die within months after the death of their wives, and mothers dying a short time after the death of one of their children.

Yes. Why else do you think that if someone in a couple of old age dies the other dies like 4 or less years after?

Sure they can. My dad died of one. He lasted 10 years without my mom but was never the same after her death. He tried to move on. He really did. He just loved her so much that he couldn't live without her any longer. His death certificate says it was cardiac arrest but I know better.

High stress under certain conditions (such as weak heart or high cholesterol) can certainly lead to death.
