I want to cover the power poll in my back yard with a climbing vine. My parter asks it will cause problems with our electricity supply.

it will only do that if you let it get overgrown. trim it regularly and don't let it get too big.

There is no problem, until the vines grow and make contact with the wires or come close enough to a high voltage cable to cause an arc. Then theres a short circuit, and local power outage is likely.

In short, keep the vines short, and you won't short the lines.

Shouldn't be a problem unless they get heavy enough to pull your house drop loose from the pole or to cause the phase wires to touch each other - then you might have a problem. Power company will not be happy.

Power company tree trimmers will come around and trim vines and trees limbs away from the lines occasionally.

Helen, I used to work at a power company. The vines most likely will not affect your electricity. If you're concerned about it, call your utility and have THEM come out and trim the vines. If you do it, you may get injured. We don't want that.
