What time of year are you planning on going?

If it's summer, go south. Las Lenas Argentina is awesome and you'd do quite well there with $5000. South America is the experience of a lifetime. Everyone should try and get down there at least once in their life.

If it's gonna be next winter, I have to recommend Whistler. Not only are Whistler and Blackcomb two of the most amazing mountains in the world but the town of Whistler is very cool to hang out in. Tons of amazing shops, clubs, bars and resturants and the atmosphere is like no other. Again, you could have a great trip there for 5 grand.

Other options I'd recommend are Vail, Mammoth and Jackson Hole all totally awesome mountains but (with the exception of Vail) none of them even compare to Whistler.

Romania, Fagaras Mountains, Balea Lake, there is a huge area still covered by 1-2 m thick snow, and there are a lot of youngsters practicing snowboard tricks! It's relatively cheap to get there if you want...
Ups, i don't know where do you live...
But... take a plane to Bucharest, then the train to Fagaras and there you will find minibuses or something to get up in the mountains. The surroundings are gorgeous, too.
