A movie that women would enjoy seeing (alone with a box of Kleenex or in a group - either way works). The movie will usually have love, tears, emotion, the kind of things most guys don't want to be seen doing/having (love, tears, emotion). The movie may or may not have a happy ending. Tears are almost a given though.

A REAL chick flick is one that you cry every time you see it, even though you know what's coming :-) Examples are: "An Affair to Remember", "Sleepless in Seattle", etc.

There is a variant - The Costume Drama/Chick Flick. Heavy on the emotional undercurrent, tragic misunderstanding, lots of eyes & sighing. Examples are: "Sense & Sensibility" (the one with Emma Thompson & Alan Rickman) and A&E's "Pride & Prejudice"

You want to make a good impression on a girl? Watch an entire Chick Flick with her without any catty comments. You lose all brownie points if you make fun of the movie in any way. :-)

The term chick flick is slang, often derisive, for a movie which is designed or considered to appeal mainly to women. These type of movies generally focus on romance or relationships or humiliation of men. Many romantic comedies or films with many female characters are labeled "chick flicks". Critics of the term have pointed out that movies aimed specifically at men are not labeled so derisively--unless one considers terms like "testosterone laden" inherently complimentary. In any case, many movies have elements thought to appeal primarily to women, and that is the primary sense the term is used for.

Chronological list of films often mentioned as chick flicks:

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
The Lake House (2006)
The Break-Up (2006)
Just My Luck (2006)
American Dreamz (2006)
Failure to Launch (2006)
Aquamarine (2006)
Something New (2006)

Usually something that you're typical straight guy wouldn't want to watch unless his girlfriend made him. Romantic comedies are the most common type of chick flick.
