I have been a cheerleader, and here's my opinion- it depends on the squad. Yes, some cheerleading squads are just a bunch of dancers in short skirts trying to be cute and spirit-y. However, some squads do exhibit a great deal of athleticism- they lift and throw people in the air (which requires a lot of precision and skill- it's very easy to get injured if you don't know how to do it right), they execute complicated moves, and many of them employ quite a bit of gymnastics. If a squad is doing these things, then I'd say they're participating in a sport. Also, competetive cheer is a sport, no quesitons asked.

Cheerleading is an activity that uses organized routines made up of elements from dance and gymnastics to cheer on sports teams at games and matches, and/or as a competitive sport. A cheerleading performer is a cheerleader.

i'm always puzzled by this question. of course cheerleading is a sport! you must be in excellent physical shape, cheerleaders hold practices everyday and compete for national titles! i guess the real questioned would be what defines an activity as a sport?in my opinion if bowling counts as a sport, cheerleading definitely does!
when i cheered (all those years ago!) and someone questioned our athleticism, i would always challenge them to do what we do. trust me, i would let just anyone toss me 15ft in the air! i was in the best shape of my life b/c of cheerleading and that a fact!

My daughter is on a competitive cheerleading squad. The jumps, tumbling, and lifts are physically demanding and alot of hard work. It is most definitely a sport !

Definitly I was the trainer for the cheerleading squad in high school and those girls got just as hurt as the footballers. Especially doing lifts and flips. So if anybody tells you it's not ask them to be thrown into the air.

Cheerleading, although it takes quite a bit of athleticism and discipline, is not a sport. It's in the same category as figure skating, diving, gymnastics. These subjective activites whose winners are decided based on opinions of judges are not sports. Basketball, baseball, hockey....things that actually keep score so the winner can be chosen without a doubt....those are sports.

yes, it's a sport. can't you get a letter in it, like any other sport?

our cheerleaders and dance team could "letter" -- if you can't you need to petition the school board to allow it.
