1. Check your auto out way beforehand.
2. Carry jumper cables, extra oil, brake fluid, flares, etc.
3. Pack a flash light, lighter, blanket, peanut butter, water just in case.
4. Map out your trip and don't deviate unless you have to.
5. Have a credit card for emergency and enough cash.
6. When your auto gets to 1/2 tank -- fill back up.
7. Let someone know where, and when you start out and check in along the way.
8. Take your cell phone and chargers.
9. Have emergency contact info in case they are needed.
10. Take your camera and have fun!

It ain't hard if you got a few beers in ya!! Also you need a pee bottle if you're a guy. That way you can pull over and put a map on your lap as you pee into the water bottle. Woman, sorry to say cannot do that. Some states suck big meatstraws like Virginia, You get pulled over in Virginia for 2 MPH over the limit. Some states like Florida let you fly down the road unpestered by rollers. Play some tunes but ONLY rock. Led Zeppelin, Cold War Kids, Tapes and Tapes, old Bowie, Nebula etc. No Rap or Hip Hop R&B. I am serious about that. I better not hear you drove there listening to Destiny's Child or crap rap.

I've gone on many road trips, including from Indiana to Nevada three times (and a 4th to come). I didn't find it difficult, as there are so many rest stops/convenience stores along the way in case you've forgotten something at home. For me the open road is exciting. There is so much more to see, as opposed to a window seat in an ariplane. Just take your time, have patience, and enjoy the ride.

Drive as much as you can without stopping, otherwise it will take you a lot longer and you'll have to endure that much more. I would drive until I needed gas; those would be my rests. As you drive more and more it will get harder and harder. You will want to take more and more breaks. I would stick to the gas routine, but, if you feel uncertain of your driving ability, take as many breaks as you want and need.

The best way to travel driving is to make a two and a half days trip into a three or four and a half days trip. Enjoy it.

How often do you drive and when/ If it were me i would make sure that i am not on the road at dusk do the shadows make it hard to see and you have to strain your eyes this increases the rate ate which you fatigue at, Second if you are not used to night driving stay away from that as well.

Try and drive the same times you are must active normally.
Put your sun glasses on before it is to bright .
try to not eat large meals before you start the drive. try and stop every two hours and get out and acutally move around

It'll be hard at first, but just take it easy for the first 100 miles and
rest and relax, then drive a little further, stop and relax and continue doing that and you'll get used to the trip.

Just make sure that you take occasional breaks and swap up driving chores. Get out and stretch your legs and nap when you aren't driving. This will help keep you alert when it's your turn.

Buy a GPS like Garmin Streetpilot that has road maps installed.
Getting there without being lost is much faster.
