They had one or two key members leave in the early 1990s, got dumped by CBS and went back to an indie label, then gradually faded away.

Quite a shame really. They were a rarity, a black group that played rock and punk more than funk or soul. I guess they just never found their market or they came at the wrong time. Or maybe it was because the best description of them was "Madness crossed with Chuck D".

Another great group that didn't get the success it deserved and you ought to check out was the Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy who released only one record, "Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury". Michael Franti (the BeatNigs, Spearhead) was the ringleader with Rono Tse, a Japanese "Industrial" musician, providing the beats. It's probably the highwater mark of all rap music; everything since has been imitations of what came before 1991. Their sole hit was "Television (The Drug Of The Nation)".

If you've never seen it, go rent the movie "Tapeheads" (John Cusack, Tim Robbins). Fishbone make cameos as a bar band, playing "Howard Beach Party" each time. It's a damn funny flick.

The group is still around, but several members have left to work on other projects. In 2005 they contributed a song to the sublime tribute album, "Look At All the Love We Found". Their last major release was "Fishbone and the Familyhood Nextperience Presents The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx", in 2000. They haven't dropped any new albums since then except for a live cd in the last 5 years.
