Yes it is. It was first discovered by Jospeh Priestly in 1775.
It is used in surgery and dentistry for its anaesthetic and analgesic effects, where it is commonly known as laughing gas due to the effects of inhaling it. It was first used as an anaesthetic in 1844 and is the only early anaesthetic still in regular use.
It is also used as an oxidizer in internal combustion engines. In this use it is known as nitrous, or NOS after a well-known brand which has become a genericized trademark. Nitrous oxide is present in the atmosphere where it acts as a powerful greenhouse gas.

Maybe. What nitrous oxide are you talking about? I'm pretty sure not...
The nitrous oxide used as laughing gas is NO2. Is that the same?

I believe they are basically the same but the nitrous for cars acts as a catalyst for the explosions on the pistons. Chemically they should be identical but they probably do not share any of the same additives.

Yes. But dont try to huff it. I used to have a friend that would fill up his tank sometimes and I did it with him a couple times. But, about 5 years ago they started putting sulfur in with the nitrous to get kids to stop using it to get high. It tastes sick and cashes your lungs out from a single hit.

Yes, it is exactly the same...BUT the Nitrous used in cars has a chemical added to make it smell and taste bad. This is to prevent abusing it by inhaling it...which probably ruins your plans!!! ;-P

The chemical composition is the same. The packaging and handling requirements are different, being more stringent for medical uses. The bottles of NOS you get for automotive performance systems also contains an additional ingredient that makes it inadvisable to inhale.

Yes it is. However they add Sulfur Dioxide (I think that the proper chemical) to the automotive grade stuff. It's so you can't use it for any type of human consumption to prevent abuse. Other than that it's the same.
I haven't experienced it, but I'm told it gives one hell of a headache if you try to "huff" the automotive stuff.
