There are several categories of relationships. Obviously a cow doesnt take an advice from a human. It is always a human taking an advice from a human. We need to categorize the relationship to answer your deep question. There are certain segrgation of people for whom advice taking is no-no. Again there is certain segregation where advice giving is no-no and some others wehre it is a 2-way process

Category 1 - Man versus Woman - Let us look at a the role of a woman in modern society - Whether it is in advanced country like USA or in a developing country in Africa, womwn are normally relegated to following orders. it is the society. They jusy have to listen and follow orders. So they have to only "take" advices... Maybe in advanced countries it is better off. But the bottom line is that women only have to "take".

Category 2 - Boss versus Subordinate - The answer is very obvious.. They are very few bosses who take advices. They only give.

Category 3 - Father versus Child - Very rarely a father wants to tap the gray cells of his child. it is always a silent dictat of other way round

Category 4 - Sibling versus Sibling - This is appropriate and balaned state. Unfortunately, if the adviced is not good or uncomfortable both the siblings fight

Category 5 - frind versus friend - Almost on all occassions this is a two way ga,e . But the problem in this balance is the person who takes the advice almost always is expecting the SOLUTION to the problem. hence if the afvice is not good, next time the same friend may not come to you for advice

Hence there are various equations. The bottom line is whoeevr is coming to you for an advice is looking upto to you as a role model or a problem solver. So dont just arbitrarily or ad-hoc give an advice. If you dont know say "dont know". But if you give a good one, people will come to you for more.

Also if you yourself want to take an advice from someone, consider whether that person is worthwhile and has all the necessary qualification for solving your problem.

Good Luck

Again

It might be easier to give advice than to take it, but if you can not take advice you should not ask for it. If you ask for advice you should be able to take it and us what you have been given. If you want the opinion of someone and don't us it once you have it then you should not have ask in the first place.

yes however:

When I give advice it is mostly based on my on experience however, somehow, people come to me and say I would look better with black hair (I am naturally blond!).. how can I take something like this seriously?? Out of the blue??

And again, if I take advise, it is usually when I ask for it, then I usually go to two, three people, hear what they have to say and based on that information I decide what to do.

I like advice base on good information not any shot with "blank shots"..

ps. People who usually are good in specific advice (doctor, lawyer, architect ) get paid alot, so if I want a good advice I pay for it.

It depends on the issue, what the advice is and who's giving it. I am good at listening to advice, and I enjoy giving mine out. However, if its a sensitive topic, one has to be careful not to step on the other person's toes. I have lost friendships for giving frank advice about cheating partners. Now I keep my mouth shut about sensitive issues unless I am specifically asked.

It is easier to give advice. We have to alter our behavior and/or mind when we take advice from someone else.

But of course, it is human nature to think that we are right and blow off advice that does not agree with what we believe to be true.
