Wear a dress. The longest dress you have. Get yourself a dust cloth, and a large glass a water. Set the bottom of the dress on fire, and start dusting like mad. Have a friend toss the water on you when you finished.
Here is another tip. Get a friend to dress-up in a bear outfit and chase you around the house as you clean. Nothing like a bear chasing you to get your attention and ignite that well needed motivation.
If the first two tips don't work, this is a last resort. Just go with the flow. Go out and buy the lowest watts light bulbs you can find and replace all the bulbs in your house with them. Put up black-out curtains. What people can't see, will be assumed cleaned.

Yes, I understand. Last Friday (off) it took me all day to get the old vacuum bag out of the upright. Never did get the new bag back in. Take your rest when you need to. Get all the cleaning supplies out and start spritzing. Open all the windows to let fresh air in. Enya, Memory of Trees, is great to work by. De-clutter as mutch as you can stand, & then you'll be motivated to have some free flat surfaces. Rearrange the furniture; it feels like a new space when you're done, plus you can get under things and really clean. Incense burning. Invite someone important over, you can clean the whole house in a couple of hours.

I do the same thing ALLLL the time. I have discovered two things that help me clean house.
1) I commit myself to 15 minutes a night during the week to doing something (I.e. Sweep the kitchen floor, Dust, Vaccum the living room)
a) When things get clutered I use a basket, I throw everything in the basket and I spend my 15minutes a night putting the stuff up.
I get up REALLY early on Saturday morning (like 5am) to clean house. It usually takes me about 2-3hours to So that means I am done by 8am to 8:30am. If I am tired I go to sleep - by noon I am awake an most of my house chores are done. now I have the WHOLE weekend to do what ever it is you want.
Another great thing to do is give yourself something to do by noon. Like lunch with a friend. If you make it your goal to have the home clean by the time you need to go to your appointment Voila your house is clean!
The biggest problem here is like me you dont have other obligations requiring you time (at least that is my assumption, I am willing to admit I could be wrong) If you create the obligations to where the chore has to be done in a specific space of time, you wont waste your time on the computer
Another great Idea is to reward yourself. set a goal like have the house clean by XX:XXam/pm and reward yourself with some new costume jewlery or by going out, or going to do something really fun due to the extra time you have created!
By the way thanks for this post. I am puttiing off cleaining up the mess from the party we threw last night. I am watching a movie on TV so I am going to clean house during the commercials

Housecleaning is so boring and you need to do it again and again. I hire cleaning lady to clean ( I am so thankful for her, I have time to exercise and to do other things I value ) my house every other week and in between times I play catch up daily. I listen music or books on tapes...It sure feels great to have a clean home. I try to not to be too obsessed about it because job is never totally done because dust is here forever!!!
Give yourself a little reward when job is done.

well dont do all your cleaning at one time. turn on some music that you know will get you up and working. make sure the music isnt to slow and not to fast but just right. keep water handy in case u get to hot or thirsty dont drink to much because if will definetly slow you down. last thing do your cleaning in 2 hour clusters so it wont wear you out. dont have to clean all in one day either. take baby steps and make sure u dont clean the same area because remember theres always the next day. dont do things like sit on the computer and doodle because it will distract you. maybe take baby naps or even sit with quiet no tvs books because like the computer it may distract you. if u have kids then you can also get them to help you because not only u but they also make messes on the daily basis. remember a clean home is a happy home just dont strain yourself with cleaning.

Me too. We have so much in common. Just get a Mr. Clean magic eraser and erase a scuff mark or something. You will be like, "Whoa man..that's cool I thought I would never remove that from my floor!" And you'll get all excited and stuff.
That will last a minute. Take the next ten minutes and answers some more questions.

I am 53 years old, and have learned to keep house only in the past three years!
What helped me was:
http://flylady.net/
(It's not a commercial site)
It isn't for everyone, but it literally changed my life. It's about so much more than housekeeping. Give it your best for two weeks or so, and you'll know if you're one of those it'll work for.
I get together with an online group once a year. Last year I woman I don't know well walked up and said, "I love you!" "Um, er . . .what?" "You told me about Flylady! It changed my life!" ~G~

Same here, but to get motivated I crank my radio real loud and just get going! Also, I keep a mental image of my house at it's dirtiest! ewwwwwwwwwww. Try to imagine how you would feel if your dearest friends dropped by and judged you by the amount of dust on your coffee tables!
