If you are having problems helping your son with THIS task, heaven help the poor guy. He better have qualified teachers, who can explain things to the students, as he sure doesn't stand a chance to have it explained again at home.

Why are you doing your son's homework? The assignment is obviously for him to learn the "b" sound and think of words that start with it. Wouldn't it be better for you to say to him "A 'b' has this sound .(make the sound)... what can you think of that starts out with that sound" and let HIM come up with the words? Hint to him if he needs it - for example what's a round toy you can roll or throw, what's a yellow fruit.....

I'm sure your son has a children dictionnary already, then he can look up in it himself with you sitting beside him and checking ;)
If he doesn't have a children dictionnary go to the bookshop and get him a nice one with pictures and colours.

I have put down simple words as my daugther had to do a similar thing earlier this year, and what ever words she chose, she had to spell them and draw the item.

I would suggest that you dust off the old dictionary and look it up, or go to Merriam-Webster online.
