A 12" ("Twelve-inch") is a Vinyl record. (12-inches in diameter)
Some bands put out material on limited-edition vinyl as a gimmick.
Vinyl is a gimmick because everything is recorded digitally now, but people still think Analog (vinyl) will sound better somehow.

Although half of the informatoin the dude above mentioned was correct as in the size of the vinyl being 12" in diameter. Disregard everything else. As this has no bearing on what you were asking.

Now as for an explanation as to why the 12" is different to the album mix generally it has nothing to do with the digital or analogue debate but more to do with the fact that it will generally differ musically as in a different gituar riff or a next rapper putting a verse down etc etc hence the 12" mix as opposed to the album one!

Hope it helps!

PS vinyl is not a gimmick as you will see people like the beastie boys dj mix master mike still using vinyl as its the most reliable medium for a dj especially a turntablist dj to use.
