Why?...and how do I correct this?

At the top of your screen, click on "My Account" and re-enter your password. Then, reset the time limit for your account to have to be re-singed in.

this is a security feature, usually this happens if your account has been opened but there has not been any activity. If you are composing an email and it is long, you might want to save your work and refresh the page every now and then- this is to prevent a case where you dont log out of your account and someone else comes to the computer behind you and has access to oyur email account. . I don't know that there is anything oyu can do about it except for doing something active while you are in your account, don't just leave one page open for a long period of time

I use to get pissed when that would happen. Nothing u can do about it that I've found. If I'm going to type a long letter, I type it in "Word" or "Abiword" so all my work doesn't go bye bye & just before I paste it in Y mail I refresh the page first. Bye bye
