I had an old Funk & Wagnall's Dictionary from the '70s when I was little. It had excellent sections in the back with famous/classic quotes, maps, and the meanings of names.
There are also a lot of internet sites that have references.
I like to jot down interesting names when I'm reading the Bible or other books, too.

Baby name books, look online in any search engine... I've seen a few meanings for my name... "Vanessa" one of them is butterfly... anyways here's a few links.
