The reason of your being scared of failure could be due to many reasons (i.e. a previous event in your life, human nature, etc... etc...). THIS IS NORMAL! Everyone is a bit scared of failure.
"I don't think I've ever had reason to be afraid of success, but I do prefer not to fail."

Scared of failure is human.
Don't forget the worst seven capital sins is pride. Since a failure cause humiliation, or defeat in your life, you're afraid not being enough good to prove something that you want to prove to people around you.
But don't forget the last thing, failure is a good experience to know that the power ain't yours. You MUST fail to get experience in your life, to progress.
It's a challenge of yourself : stop being afraid to fail. Failures are natural. Of course, failures are depressing because you wanted success but if the next time you get to do it, then the failure won't be wasted because you learnt from it : humans have to do mistakes to find what's bad or what's good for them. You really think you'll be happy if you can do everything without knowing what you like the most?
Leave the pride aside, it's a bad bad feeling. Pride is nothing. Pride is hurt, but you are not. so leave this sin aside and make your failures a success the next time you try to challenge it them ;)

So what? Like I am Carl Jung or Sigmund now? I guess I turned into Fowler, Kinsey, Hull, Wundt, Zimbardo or Thorndike too? Maybe I am the reincarnation of Maslow, Dunlap, Milgram, Loftus, Pavlov, Turner, Clark, James, Skinner, Hull, Bandura, Sternberg, Erikson, Tolman, Vygotsky, Adler, Festinger, Watson, Gardner, Rogers or Piaget? Psychology is so stupid. What idiots thought up such a ridiculous field of so-called science? I could get better advice from a circus clown. The reason you are scared of failure is because you are scared of failure. Take stock in yourself and try something. If you succeed then you have destroyed failure and your fear of it. Why do I need a shrink to tell me why I can't get up off the sofa and make it to the refrigerator?

You really want to do something and you think you can, but you don't because.... what if I fail?
I think this is more of an issue of EXPOSURE.
It can be exposing your real self, your weaknesses and fears, to others, who may laugh at you... but MORE LIKELY, it is probably your own fear of exposing your weaknesses and fears to yourself. Afterall, you don't really want to see yourself as less than or as a failure, right?
My suggestion? Do things you know you will fail at (like compete in a race you won't win.) It gives you the exhilirating experience of being human, failing, and realizing that you will survive. It will give you self-compassion and self-respect just because you tried despite your fear of failure.
I feel with you, my friend, and I am encouraged that you even ask this question. Have fun exploring!

Because failure equals rejection. You feel that if you fail at something, then certain people if your life will think badly of you. Failure also doesn't ever do your self esteem good either so it generally makes you feel really low...

I'm no shrink or anything, but I believe that you could be more afraid of success than failure.
A huge reason why people constantly fail is because they are really afraid of success and the added pressure success would bring.
Subconsciously people strive to fail because it is much easier to fail right away than to have it all fall apart after success. The LESS You Fall The Easier It is To Deal With That Fall!
Explaining many other facets of life also.

This can be a very complex issue. Are you afraid of what others may think if you fail at something? Maybe this fear is holding you back from trying or are you hiding behind this fear and using it as an excuse not to try!? Most people that have succeeded have failed many going bankrupt etc. Hope this helps you.

I don't know why you are scared of failure because I don't know you and your question doesn't give much information about your specific problem.

well it's normal for people to be afraid of failure. but you shouldn't be afraid or you won't be able trying anything else for the rest of your life. it's normal, just learn from failures.
