I'm ripping my store bought CD's using the software that came with my Creative Nomad Jukebox. By default it rips them at
MP3, Stereo, Constant Bitrate, 128 kbps. Should I increase the 128 kbps to a higher setting? Should I change the bitrate to Varible? Why? Thanks

It depends on different options. If you really want high quality music, then you should rip at higher sampling rates (instead of 44.1 KHz, use 48 KHz) and higher bitrates (instead of 128 Kbps, use 192 Kbps, 224 Kbps, or best at 384 Kbps). However, higher the quality, greater the file size. So you won't be able to store a large number of songs on the computer/iPod.

Constant bitrate (CBR) is a means of encryption which is more used for streaming over the network since it allows a constant bandwidth which routers and other Internet devices such as servers are comfortable with. Variable bitrate (VBR) is usually used for local file playback when you simply listen to ripped music from your computer/iPod but don't stream it over a network. For your purpose, I recommend using VBR.

I hope that helps.

The higher the bitrate the larger the file and higher the quality, I rip at 160 bitrate, the human ear cannot hear the difference over that rate even tho some people rip at 190.

the higher the bitrate the higher the quality but it also takes up more space on your hard drive mp3 is a universal audio codec so i would stick with it 128 bit is pretty good if you want better then that try 256 i would recommend staying with a constant bit rate so the quality of the song will be the same thru out

I have found that using MP3 @ 128kbps & it works just fine. I have ripped a few at 192 (hey, that rhymes) but I don't hear a dramtic difference. I think if I were going to play my ripped CD's back primarliy thru my home system, I'd care more about ulitmate sound quality, but there is so much ambient noise in a car (where I listen mostly) that to me the diff is not noticeable. Good Luck.

It's better to rip in 128kbs because it keeps best quality of background music and voice of the singer or musical insturments and keeps the file size to a normal size

If you do increase, more space will be used. If you have a huge hard drive, go for it.
