Tom Clancy. I love his books. There action packed and have great detail. They are also long and I like having to take a lot of time to read a book, it makes it more interesting. Splinter Cell are my favorites. Rainbow Six is great and I am reading Without Remorse right now.

There are so many!

To keep my answer short..er, I'll stick to the Mystery Novel category, in the order in which I "discovered" these authors. I include the names of the main characters they created:

1. Agatha Christie (Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple).
2. Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta).
3. Sue Grafton (Kinsey Millhone).
4. Elizabeth George (Thomas Lynley, Barbara Havers).
5. Laurie R. King (modern take on Sherlock Holmes, paired with the wife and investigative partner the author created for him, Mary Russell).

Of course, I love other classic writers who have written novels/plays/poems that move me and make me think (Cervantes, Ibsen, DuMaurier, Austen, Shakespeare, Shaw, etc.)

However, for sheer escapism (aside from J.K.Rowling and her Harry Potter novels), mystery is where it's at for me. I can lose myself in a well written plot driven by fully developed, interesting characters that I care about, and forget about my problems for a couple of hours.

What's not to love about books? Hail to summer reading!
