why do we receive gifts from other people. Does anybody think it would be a great idea if we gave all of our friends a small gift each on our birthday. That way we wouldnt be encouraged to be as greedy and we would get little gifts throughout the year. Also there would be no danger of forgetting anyones birthday as you only do the buying on your own.

Any thoughts?

I say screw 'em all! I'm tired of people expecting me to buy a gift. If I want to buy you a gift, I don't need a specific calendar day to do so.

Umm I don’t agree with that…everyone deserves one special day for themselves…I think it is the way it is for a reason…people are greedy they want to feel appreciated and it makes sense especially on there birthday and a present is the physical way of showing appreciation I guess. and as for the people around us they get a birthday too..to get presents from us and be celebrated once a year…I wouldn’t like spending my day on other people cause there’s so much I alone would have done in that whole year that I’d like to just focus on me at least for that one day….hmmm I could give gifts to people important in my life any day of the year to tell them I care but on my birthday I rather be told they care about me…:)

Brilliant. Idealistic and practical. I will start recommending this to people.
The only caveat I have is in re. 'big' birthdays (18, 21 and the ones ending in 0 or 00) - but the person's friends could organise a celebration if they wanted to give the person something as a 'well done' for not dying.

I think it is a fantastic idea! I always always felt guilty with my mom planning some big shindig for my birthday. I kept thinking, "She's the one that sat in labor for hours and hours because of me. Shouldn't we be giving HER all of the praise for her fine work!!!" :)

With your plan......we can tell all those people that are true friends throughout the year "thank you" for being there. With this plan.........we will see some people that are recognized over and over for their constant kindness to everyone, while those that forget to reach out to friends might realize they are aren't paying it forward. This truly might be the one thing that gets humanity right back on track. I freaking love this idea!!!

What if you're skint around the time of your birthday, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who leaves things till last minute, and then can't afford to buy for all? But is this concept, not a bit like Christmas, only then everyone does it for everyone else all on the same day?

actually never thought of it that way.. i try and be good to people all year long anyway.. i am a very caring person and help when i can...and sometimes you have to watch our who we help or who we are around.. i really would just like to forget my birthday.. getting to many years on me now...but yours is a good thought... i have found more people to be more concerned with just theirself and you have a refreshing outlook on this anyway..you must be a very thoughtful person yourself and for this i am glad.. do not let anyone use you or hurt you to much, cause i have met some that will do this.. we have to take care of ourself too and you need to think about that.. do be careful of the friends you keep in this world.. i think there are a lot of pretend friends and very few real friends .....well good luck to you and god bless you....

Yes!! The number one person on our lists would be our Moms.
We wouldn't be here if it weren't for her.
I am always surprised when people celebrate their birthday without giving thanks to the good woman who gave us a chance to be born in the first place.
I usually end up calling my Mom first on my Birthday and just chatting.
I really like this idea. Why not celebrate yourself by giving of yourself.

My friends gift, is to share in my birthday with me, it is my day, not theirs I want presents dammit.
Seriously though all my friends are either to cheap or forget that it is my birthday, so I dont get presents from them. So I just started buying myself birthday presents.

Absolutely fantastic idea - Pay it forward for birthdays. Each year you celebrate not your own birth, but the people in your life that have made the past year good for you. Damn, Goatboy, that's one kicking idea.

That'd be too many gifts to buy, and it would still come out the same as if they bought us gifts on our birthday.

But you do, you give them a party, the chance of having a great time, you give them a memory that they can keep with them forever.

You give them your time, you share your time with them, you share your birthday with them.

I think that's better than any material thing!

(Also they get food and drinks, what else do you want to give them? What else would they need?)
