Wal= Walton, the founder Sam Walton. Mart= Market. Also Sam's Club is similar, Sam Walton named it Sam's Club because the only people who can shop there are members of the "club".

Wal-Mart was founded by a man named Sam WALton.... he just used the first part of his name attached to "Mart" for the name of his store.

Wal-Mart was founded by Sam Walton of Bentonville, Arkansas who probably wanted to trade on the K-Mart brand name by combining it with the first three letters of his last name. Just my own theory....

The "Mart" simply means a market, a place to sell things. The "Wal" part is from the name of the man who started the company, Sam Walton.
Similarly, the "Toys R Us" chain of stores was started by Charles Lazarus. (Laz-ar-us = Toys-R-Us ... I know, it's not very similar).
