I think that my thermostat on my Impala is faulty. Whenever I drive it, the temp bounces between 3/4 away from red to 1/4 away from red. It gets really bad when I am stopped or I am going 85 or higher. It never goes past 1/4 away from red line. I don't run a/c too often so I don't know if that system is being affected but whenever it gets close to the red line, it starts to cool itself down. I thought it was just a funny quirk of Impalas but I have asked others and they said it doesn't happen. Can anyone help with finding the thermostat or at least giving me another idea on what might be the malfunction?

From your description, your thermostat is working properly. Two indications that a thermostat is faulty are: The engine never warms up (thermostat stuck open) Engine overheats (thermostat stuck shut). You'll also notice that when sitting in traffic and you see the temp rising, the electric fan will kick on just before the temp starts to go back down. This is all normal. People who don't have full guages in their cars never see the fluctuations of temperatures and pressures that go on continuously with an internal combustion engine.

Just so you know, the thermostat is located under the mount where the top radiator hose enters the engine block.

The T-Stat is located on the front of the intake manifold. Just follow the upper hose to the engine, it will lead you to a t-stat goose neck. Remove the hose, and the 2 attaching bolts, you found the t-stat. Remember which way you removed it, put the new t-stat back in the same way. Not upside down!
It could be the thermostat sticking on you causing this problem. You can also be low on coolant creating an air pocket in the engine block, giving you false readings on your gauge. Has the engine over heated or boiled over? Sometimes a bad headgasket will cause the same problems.
Good Luck

one thing to remember when any car is operated without the a/c on it is going to run hotter than normal. The cooling fans go into natural run mode which means the are temperature operated not turned on by the pressure switches on the a/c compressor. The thermostat is on the block side of the upper radiato hose, but sounds like it is working properly by the statement it cools down by itself when temp gets up. That is how the thermostat works, holds the water until it gets to 195 degrees then sends it to the radiator to cool,

it's at the bottom of the top hose to the radiater, but you also might have an air lock in your system. you should take it somewhere and have it tested.
