Yellow and red cards were first introduced in the game by British referee Ken Aston and its first major use was in the 1970 World Cup:
The cards are shown to the players who have committed a foul. The color of the card depends on the severity of the foul.
A yellow card is shown by the referee to indicate that a player has been officially cautioned.
A red card is shown by the referee to indicate that a player has been officially send-off or expelled from the game, and must leave the field inmediatly and won't be able to play the rest of the game.
The referee can give as many cards as needed, the amount of card given is related to the number of offences (requiring a card) during the game.
During one game a player can receive:
1 red card the player, and the player is expell from the game and no substitute player can come in.
1 yellow card (the player has been officially cautioned)
2 yellows card, which is the maximum allow, and it's equivalent to 1 red card and the player has to leave the match (and that's way the referree after the second yellow shows the red card). And like a direct red card, the player can't play the next game for the team and no substitute player can come in.
But during the tournament the player can receive any number of cards.

A yellow card is given for an offense that is committed but is not deemed too serious, such as a non-violent tackle or an inadvertant handball.

A red card is given to a player who commits a serious offense - such as a violent tackle.

If a player gets a red card he is immediately sent from the field of play for the remainder of the game. If a player gets a yelloe card he can remain in the game. However, should a player receive two yellow cards in one game, upon receiving the second yellow card he will also be issued a red card and will then have to leave the field for the duration of the match.

Two yellow cards = One red card.

A yellow card is given to you for a pretty harsh foul, and two yellow cards get you a red card which ejects you out of a game

you can get 2 yellow cards in a game then you are sent off, yellow cards can be for many things, but then a red card is for something intentional and you get sent off for just 1 of those

Yellow card is to warn the player about a big foul. You can only get one yellow card. Then if you commit another big foul you get a red card which suspends you from the current game and the next game.

You could also get yellow card for arguing with referee. Or for pulling your shirt of or for running of the pitch while celebrating a goal.
For spitting an opponent you could get yellow or red card.
One referee would give you a yellow card for a harder (two legged) tackle, other would give you a red for the same thing.
Diving in penalty box would get you a yellow card.

yellow cards are for strong but not brutal physical contact with another player, disrespecting the ref, handballs etc. you can only get one card from the ref, the second one is a red card, getting a red card is immediate suspension from the game. if you brutally hit someone, you automatically get a red card, suspending you from the current game and the next one

in a game you can only get 1 yellow. the second yellow means you are out.
in a tournament any 2 yellow in any previous game means you will miss the next game and cannot play.
