It would look great filled with potpourri... Anyway even a betta in there can be a bit tight. As for goldfish, lets look at this, a regular goldfish grows well over two feet, hmm is that enough? Well the typical rule for fish UNDER four inches is one inch per gallon. Why, mass increases disproportionately to size meaning 10 one inch fish are not the same as one ten inch fish. Finally, goldfish being cold water need copious amounts of oxygen which a fishbowl's limited surface area design can't provide. Oh and goldfish are incredibly messy. One fancy per fifteen gallons, one common in ponds.

Dont put a goldfish in there. I dont know why people think they are fine for bowls.
Aside from housing a fish you can use it for a change bowl, maybe fill it with soil and put a nice plant in it, for something different if you have people over you can serve some kinda pasta or something in it or if you have a large enough tank you can put the bowl in it and use it as a decorative piece. There are lots of things you can use a bowl for other then fish, just use you imagination. But if you do want to use it for fish I think a betta is your only option. Things like frogs and shrimp are very sensitive to water params and will need a filter to keep the tank cycled and healthy.

Goldfish most certainly do not belong in a bowl. A bowl is a deathtrap. Comet, common golfish should grow over a foot, and fancy golds grow as large as a grapefruit.
And a bowl really isnt the best place for bettas either.
You could probably house ghost shrimp in there.

Grow some low light aquatic plants in it.
In a fish bowl only two kinds of fish will survive betta and goldfish (although for a very short time)

You can grow aquatic plants in it.
Goldfish do okay in a bowl, provided you have enough surface area on the water for oxygen exchange.

For crabs, frogs, and salamanders. If all else fails put a plant in it.
As for other fish, the only one might be a gold fish.
