Society's downfall has been predicted with alarming regularity since the beginning of civilization. Those "old days" were not as "good" as folks make them out to be, as brown eyed bohemian pointed out.
While we have more ways of destroying our planet than ever, I don't think we're quite ready for "Armageddon" just yet. While the disappearance of the US middle class is a chilling development, it's not the biggest we face.
Climate changes prompted by global warming will make it tougher for BILLIONS of people to have any quality of life at all. People (especially in the wealthier nations like US and Europe) will have to get politically active locally and nationally to get their leaders to follow the proper course. Just as important, we will need to network on an informal basis with our counterparts in other countries. Keep on the good foot. Cincypix.

No, The 50's was a time of racsim and social intolrance and plus the 50's were boring. STDS have been around for thousand of years, parents have been killing and abusing kids since the dawn of time, and there have always been locks on doors. The 50's weren't a magical time, that's when they started to test atomic bombs in the Mojave desert. I think your judgement is clouded.

The state of affairs in the U.S. is in constant decline. Those who believe these events point to the "end of times" say, "What did you expect? It's scriptural prophecy." I don't know if they are right or wrong...but I do know this: the Middle Class my parents worked so hard to establish is disappearing; we are facing all the challenges you mention; and our society has become one that elevates entertainment and materialism to a worshiped level. Sounds a little like the Roman Empire, don't you think??? If we dont' learn from the lessons of history we are bound to repeat them... looks like we're just barreling toward the fall to me.
Youth has always been the conscience of a society---keeping them focused on the greater good...or at least making us think about things from a different perspective. Today, just see lemmings---following the MTV marketing millionaires right over the cliff. Politicians and "so-called" leaders kow-tow to special interest and the need to get re-elected and get their piece of the pie---the Golden Parachute of members of Congress is an absolute slap in the face of every hard-working American! Money is God and everybody wants to get religion!!!
Sorry, you got me on a soapbox there.

Oh, I think it's on the way to collapse anyway, regardless of what people do. The current situation is unsustainable for lots of reasons. But it might last for a considerable while. . . it's possible to pull up a chair on the porch, kick back, and watch everything fall to pieces in slow motion. Trends can always change, of course, but in this particular instance I don't see that happening unless something major occurs.

It seems our society is ensuring a certain demise for itself, but I don't think absolute destruction will have come in but 50 years, and arguably the "downfall' has already occured.
