First of all..make sure you know what your getting yourself into! Many 1st time entrepeneurs learn how tough it is the hard way!
Next pick something you LOVE and that think others love! Then begin seeking companies that offer this same product or service. Learn all you can from them! Don't think of it as espionage.... there's always room for one more competitor. Sometimes building an alliance with a competitor is a good thing!!
Next.... take a class, or start reading... you MUST learn the basics (Accounting, Sales, Customer Serv....etc)
Finally...start small. It's easier to change direction!
Example: Food catering
Maybe start with a specialized menu that caters to the elderly (Largest demographic group)... Approach a elderly housing facility and work on them allowing you to offer your products to their tenants.... Grab as much feedback as you can....then approach others!

A successful entrepreneur is someone who has a dream. They don't let anything get in the way of their dream and just keep working away towards it. To be successful, you must have goals. Then you have to break those goals down from long term to short term to monthly, weekly and daily. All you are doing is following a road map then to what you need to achieve. You must be personable and genuinely care about people you do business with. You have to take risks and do things outside of your "comfort zone". When you have a vision, and that vision sets you on fire, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it.
You have to aim for the stars....aim high!

Ask a lot of questions and do a lot of research about your field of interest (pros & cons). Learn how to stay out of trouble w/government.
For example, contact Small Business Administration (sba.gov) & their SCORE Volunteers to get matched w/retired executive in your field. Contact a business attorney, an Account, Dept of Labor & your national & local Chamber of Commerce. Also, share your business & marketing plan w/mentors both personal & professional. Furthermore, enroll in a college level basic management course. Last but not least, Accept it, adopt it, and achieve it. It is not what you make; it is what you keep in your pocket. Do not let pride cause financial ruins. Focus + Discipline + Serious = Success.
Best Wishes
In summary, u must know how to play the game b4 u can win.
