im starting to like metal.....but i dont know what bands are good? who do u guys listen to?

I just have to say that most of the bands mentioned above ARE heavy metal bands. Tool is not the only heavy metal band in the world, despite a couple of comments above. Even if they weren't any other bands, my default, A Perfect Circle (Maynard's other band) would be too. Whatever.
Anyway, I like only a little heavy metal. I prefer Alternative Rock.

Death Metal:
Obituary, Death, Entombed (old stuff), Konkhra, Six Feet Under, Carcass, Napalm Death, Dismember, Morbid Angel, etc

Euro Metal:
In Flames, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, Sinergy, Nightwish, etc.

Folk Metal:
Finntroll, Korpiklaani

Speed Metal:
Iced Earth, Dragonforce, Cryptopsy (speedy death)

Industrial Metal:
Godflesh, Rammstein

Nu Metal:
Tool, Korn

Pop Metal:
AC/DC, Ratt, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Motley Crue, etc

Borderline:
early Rush, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Primus, Jimi Hendrix (the term was invented because of his music), etc.

Firstly, half the bands mentioned before really can't be mentioned as heavy metal.
Secondly, Bob Ross(or something like that) got it right. All the heavy metal you need is in Tool. 10,000 Days, Aenima, Undertow, Laterus, and Opiate; not one has disappointed me. Listen to Reflection, Vicarious, or Disgustipated and youll know what I'm talking about.

old school 80's bands like Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Dokken, Ratt. also try KISS, Judas Priest, the Scorpions, and of course the early works of Van Halen. Go to the roots of metal and try Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
