If you are a gamer then you will be best served by a desktop as they offer more flexibility in terms of upgrading. Being a gamer myself, you will be putting something new in your system about every six months or so. If you are truly a dedicated gamer then you will be best off building your own system (you can use mine as a guide or not):
AMD Athlon 64x2 3800+
2GB PC3200 Memory
dual 7600GS graphics cards (SLi)
Creative X-Fi Sound card
dual DVDRW drives
560W SLi certified power supply
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard (gaming edition)
Logitech X-530 (5.1 Channel) speakers
17" Samsung 173P (DVI) LCD
But of course it comes down to what games you like. If you meant those silly little online games then you don't need something quite that powerful. If you mean games like HL2, GRAW, FEAR... then yeah... you will need something that powerful and while you can get laptops that powerful they are two to three times the price of a desktop and you can't upgrade them to nearly the extent you can a desktop.
I'll probably be looking to get one of the new AM2 motherboards so I can get one, a better processor and two, support for DDR2 memory but that will be in a year or so. Plus I'm all out of PCI slots and PCIe slots as I am using every single one of them.

I will say desktop because it has a lot more Mb than a laptop and it has a better graphic and sound card. So i will prefer the gaming computers from dell. But if your an to go person, then get a laptop.

Desk top.
Lap tops are not that great in a lot of games, because the video cartridges are shared with other things...
Desk tops, you have a video card, and its not shared, plus you have more power than a lap top. My son has a lap top and wants to put lots of video games on it, and found that the power wasnt as good, and the graphics card was some kind of shared programs instead of a "real card", so he couldnt do certain applications, that he wasnted to perform.
I wish you well..
