I have an '87 230 Suzuki. What would a different caburetor do for me.

Generally, a smaller carb gives better torque because the smaller oriface forces the mixture to speed up to fill the cylinder, but this also limits revs and peek power. In contrast, a larger carb will lower the torque down low while giving better HP on the top end because the larger oriface has, ultimately, the ability to flow more fuel than a smaller one. This is the trade-off that is ALWAYS played when any internal combustion engine is being planned for a particular application. The best comprimise is what is usually found and that being a medium of usable torque, sufficient power and reasonable fuel economy.

Not enough info given. Adding a different carb can do anything from make it run like a racer, to absolutely kill it so it will not run. Sounds like you aren't a mechanic, therefore you should go to an ATV shop and discuss your thoughts one. He/she will probably turn you on to the correct carb to look for and maybe where to get it.
