Can anyone explain the relationship of physics when using a cough-relieving medicine?

I need an explanation like, how the medicine relieves cough and removes phlegm with an explanation related to physics.

Cough medicine does not work by physics. It works by biochemistry. It either suppresses the cough reflex neurologically or lowers the production of phlegm. Neither is physical.
